75 years is correct, but the year was 1999. Mallory, who was born in the village of Mobberley – about six miles from Macclesfield – was lost on Everest in 1924, along with Andrew Irvine (whose body has never yet been found). With no conclusive evidence either way, speculation continues as to whether they succeeded in their summit bid.
